Can Poor Posture Affect Our Health?

"For the organs to function effectively, the whole structure of the musculo-skeletal system is important.
If one does not use the body correctly over a long period of time, back and neck pain can occur. This is why it is important that children develop good habits in sitting, standing and the use of their own bodies."

The Effects of Poor Postures

Back Pain

Back pain and injury can be caused by excessive deformation and pressure of the discs.

Poor Blood Circulation
Sitting on high chairs increases pressure on the femoral vein wall in the back of the thigh. This can be a cause of blood clotting in the veins of the legs.

Breathing

Slouched posture makes the heart and lungs less efficient and concentration may be affected.

Heart

Slouching at the desk increases the pressure inside the chest. This may cause the heart to work harder to pump blood through the lungs.

Cervical Spine

The neck has the least pressure when the head is in an upright position, where it is well-balanced. It is noted that with good posture, the centre of gravity is situated within the spinal column, such that body weight is distributed evenly along all vertebrae. With poor posture, the center of gravity is projected forward and that places strain on the neck muscles, shoulders, the vertebrae of the neck and lower back and on the stomach.

Poor posture leads to fatigue more quickly, it strains ligaments and bones in young children and it interferes with respiration, heart action and digestion.

Ergonomic Bags:

How It Helps

What the Doctors Recommend

Dr David Tio
Dr David Tio, a renowned Osteopath for 18 years in Singapore, in his endorsement letter commented, "Statistics have shown that school books children carry, are very heavy and 20 pounds (approx. 9kg) is quite common. Therefore, it is important for parents to look for a good bag with firm back and moulded support for their children whose young muscles and joints are developing. Features of McNeill® & Scout® Ergonomic Bags are able to prevent postures problems like hunching and backache in children. I endorse and recommend both bags to concerned parents."
